چکیده

The transformation sequence of melt-spun Al!/5.2at.% Ni!/6.8at.% Yb is characterized by X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and atom-probe field-ion microscopy. An isochronal DSC thermogram detects three major exothermic transformation steps, with onset temperatures of 180, 292, and 327 8C, respectively. Atom-probe analyses reveal the evolution of compositional inhomogeneities on an atomic scale. In addition to Ni!/clusters present in the as-quenched alloy, Ni!/Yb co-clusters form during isochronal heating to 188 8C. Al!/rich precipitates are detected after heating to 250 8C, with the Ni and Ni!/Yb clusters still present, constituting possible precursors of intermetallic phases formed during advanced transformation stages. # 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Lower nanometer-scale size limit for the deformation of a metallic glass by shear transformations revealed by quantitative AFM indentation

We combine non-contact atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging and AFM indentation in ultra-high vacuum to quantitatively and reproducibly determine the hardness and deformation mechanisms of Pt(111) and a Pt57.5Cu14.7Ni5.3P22.5 metallic glass with unprecedented spatial resolution. Our results on plastic deformation mechanisms of crystalline Pt(111) are consistent with the discrete mechanisms est...

Characterization of nanometer-scale defects in metallic glasses by quantitative high-resolution transmission electron microscopy

Although defects can have a significant effect on the properties of amorphous materials, in many cases these defects are poorly characterized and understood. This is at least partly due to the difficulty of imaging defects in amorphous materials in the electron microscope. In this work, we demonstrate the utility of quantitative analysis of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy for t...

Mesoscopic and nano-scale systems

Studying the properties of structures where at least one spatial dimension is on the nanometer scale is motivated by many factors from engineering (such as the semiconductor industry’s push towards higher density integrated circuits), chemistry (developing methods to produce particles of well controlled size and structure), biology (using DNA to control the self-assembly of small structures) an...

A structural model for metallic glasses.

Despite the intense interest in metallic glasses for a variety of engineering applications, many details of their structure remain a mystery. Here, we present the first compelling atomic structural model for metallic glasses. This structural model is based on a new sphere-packing scheme-the dense packing of atomic clusters. Random positioning of solvent atoms and medium-range atomic order of so...

Metallic glasses: Family traits.

The disordered atomic structure of metallic glasses gives rise to unique mechanical and physical properties such as strength and elasticity, and are being considered for a wide range of applications. However, to understand and ultimately control these properties, it is important to study their disordered structure. Seen on the macroscale, metallic glasses are isotropic and homogeneous. On the m...
